Boarding kennels range from traditional outdoor runs to full pet hotels with heated private rooms. Before you compare prices, compare where your pet will actually sleep: indoors or outdoors, alone or shared, heated in winter and cool in summer.
Visit before you book. A well-run kennel smells clean, is calm rather than constantly barking, and is happy to show you every area your pet will use.
Ask about vaccinations, medication, the vet they use, who is on site at night and how you will hear how your pet is doing. Get deposit and cancellation terms in writing, especially for peak season.
Prices vary by city, size of pet and type of room. Each listing shows a "from" rate where the hotel has shared it, and you can send one enquiry to get exact prices for your dates.
Not always, but pet hotels usually offer private indoor rooms, more attention and updates. For anxious, older or indoor pets, the extra space and quiet are often worth it.
Many do, in a separate cattery away from the dogs. Cats are calmer in a cats-only building, so ask how far the cattery is from the dog kennels.
Vaccination certificate, enough of their usual food, any medication with written doses, and something that smells of home.
